    What is the world coming to? Google gets more powerful and will soon be basically scanning our fingerprints via our keyboard to find out what we had for breakfast, Microsoft seems to be loosing its grip on the world as the European commission ruled that they had to give other web browsers a fair bite of the user pie and Apple, well Apple keep on interfering with both of them as well as launching highly anticipated devices that will supposedly change the wold as we know it!

    But where will all this squabbling end, who else is involved (Amazon, Facebook) who will gain and who will loose out? or will they all end up destroying each other in a Reservoir Dogs style shoot out! (my money’s on Mr.White).

    I don’t think so, but is there room for all of them in our lives? Can they share us? With the advent of Cloud technology about to engulf the way we do everything who knows the answer, not me but here is my slant on it. Read More

    Love Thy Sonos…

    The reason why I started writing these world famous blogs (in EN5) along with ‘Gadget of the week’ articles, was to share my love, experiences, views and rants with my friends, clients and anyone else who cares.

    The aim of these blogs (with exception of the stuff that I have shamelessly, stolen and plagiarised from far more intellectual, astute, and literal people than I) is to give you the heads up to some amazing kit and new tech that you need to be aware of, play with and purchase to enrich your life, alienate you from your partners and seriously diminish your bank account.

    You will be happy to know that this week is no different and hopefully I will achieve just that!
    The Sonos device is a wireless multi-room, music system which enables you to stream your entire music system (and more) throughout your house and I purchased one just before Xmas as my present and project to get stuck into during the holidays. Most tech heads will appreciate the harder to set up the better. the more manuals, cables and head scratching the better (and gives you a good excuse to have a real go at the kids when it all goes pear shape!).   • Featured AR the future?

    AR – The future?

    Augmented Reality, Sounds like a 70’s game show or ‘the baddies’ from TV show’s Blake’s 7 or Space 1999! However it’s here, it’s in it’s (relative) infancy and could be set to the biggest technology movement of the decade. Its effect on society could be seismic, similar in impact to the shift from the dominance of the printed word to the takeover of the Internet.

    AR is a way of layering information over the top of your surroundings, giving you Terminator like vision but with the ability of tracking down WIFI hotspots, points of interest and the nearest Starbucks instead of tracking down (and destroying) metallic, fluid-like aliens from another dimension (at least the first gen is!).

    The earliest microbes that survived on land may have synthesized fat molecules to prevent their death from dehydration.

  • Fears of Undersea Methane Leaks Already Coming True

    Prodigious plumes of planet-warming methane are bubbling from sediments across a broad region of Arctic seafloor previously thought to be sealed by permafrost, new analyses indicate. The resulting increase of methane gas in the atmosphere may accelerate climate warming, scientists say.

    Though immense amounts of carbon are known to be trapped in the peatlands of Siberia, a larger, often unrecognized carbon reservoir lies hidden just north of that frigid region, says Natalia Shakhova, a biogeochemist at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. The East Siberian Arctic Shelf — a 2.1-million-square-kilometer patch of Arctic seafloor that was exposed during the most recent ice age, when sea levels were lower — is three times larger than all of today’s land-based Siberian wetlands. When the region was above sea level, tundra vegetation pulled carbon dioxide from the air as plants grew. That organic material, much of which didn’t decompose in the frigid Arctic, accumulated in the soil and is the source of modern methane. Read More
